The Sixteenth President of the IADR

1939-40

Founder of the IADR

In celebrating the International Association for Dental Research’s Centennial, the IADR pays tribute to the Association’s founder and sixteenth president (1939-40) Dr. William J. Gies. Through his major contributions as a biochemist, dentist and professor at Columbia University, Dr. Gies advanced the practice of biomedical research to improve oral health worldwide. With a vision to bridge the gap between journalism and disseminating new discoveries in science, he founded the Journal of Dental Research (JDR) in 1919. Today, the JDR has been recognized as the most prominent journal in the field of dentistry. In 2020, the IADR will recognize 100 years of extraordinary achievements in dental, oral and craniofacial research globally. The Association proudly honors Dr. Gies and all of the IADR Presidents whose leadership has built a century of success and charted a groundbreaking future.
